Microsoft Totally Going to Make Things Happen in Tablets

Microsoft (MSFT) — which foresaw the tablet PC, but failed to commercialize it — has a lot to prove in the market currently dominated by Apple’s (AAPL) iPad, and every intention of proving it. Bringing a Windows-based slates to market “is job one urgency around here,” CEO Steve Ballmer at the company’s Financial Analyst Meeting Thursday. “No one is asleep at the switch. … We have got to make things happen. Just like we had to make things happen on netbooks, we have to make things happen on Windows 7 and slates.”

And just how just how does the company propose to “make things happen”?

Well, that’s not entirely clear, but make no mistake, things are definitely going to happen.

“We’re working with our hardware partners, we’re tuning Windows 7 to work on slates, Ballmer explained. “We’ve got the user base, we’ve got the user familiarity. We’ve got everything on our side if we do things really right.”

Of course that’s often the case with Microsoft. The problem is, it doesn’t always manage to do things really right. Certainly, it didn’t manage it with Windows Vista. Or Windows Mobile. Or Zune. Or, more recently, Kin. Who’s to say this time will be any different?

Not sure whether Moby Dick or Godot is the proper reference at this point: Apple’s white iPhone 4, which has been causing Apple no end of problems, continues to do so.

In June, the company said it was having problems manufacturing the devices (as opposed to the black models, which it was simply unable to produce in enough volume to satisfy demand), but that they’d be available in July. And Steve Jobs reiterated that time frame at his July 16 Antennagate news conference.

Not true, it turns out. Here’s Apple’s (AAPL) newest statement: “White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.”

IBM Hits on Bottom Line, Misses on Sales

Has IBM benefited from the overall uptick in corporate spending?

Posting second-quarter results after the market’s close Monday, the company reported earnings per share of $2.61, up from $2.32 a share last year. and sales of $23.72 billion, up from $23.25 billion last year. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had been looking for earnings of $2.58 a share on $24.2 billion in revenue. So while the company’s higher profit exceeded expectations, its revenue came as something of a disappointment, and investors have dragged its shares down about three percent in after-hours trading.

Looking ahead, IBM (IBM) raised its 2010 net income guidance to $11.25 per share. That’s a nickel-per-share increase over its most recent guidance and suggests the company is confident that uptick in spending will continue.

Said CEO Sam Palmisano, “In the second quarter we again delivered double-digit earnings-per-share growth, increased margins, as well as improving constant-currency revenue performance in our ongoing software, services and hardware businesses, and in all geographies. With the benefit of our strategic growth investments, our mix of higher-value business and the introduction of new System z and Power Systems, we are confident of our ability in the second half of the year to continue our strong business performance, grow profit and drive shareholder returns.”

Office 2010 Having Reception Problems Too

Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer describes the reception given to Office 2010 as “incredible,” but according to NPD, it’s been anything but. In the research house’s view, the first two weeks of Office 2010 sales have been “a bit disappointing.”

The latest data from NPD’s Weekly Tracking Service reveals Office 2010 units sold and dollars earned to be down from Office 2007’s initial two weeks of sales, though slightly ahead of sales trends for the aging software suite so far this year. That doesn’t mean it’s not a strong product–the reviews have been largely positive–just that it is having difficulty gaining momentum in a saturated market. A vast improvement over Office 2003, Office 2007 sold 10 million new copies retail during its lifetime. But folks who shelled out $399 to buy it three years ago aren’t feeling so compelled to do it again for its successor.

“Office 2007 was a radical new design that certainly helped deliver a lot of curious buyers and it was launched nearly parallel with Vista, adding a good deal of promotional activity in the software aisle, both of which likely helped drive initial sales of Office 2007,” NPD analyst Stephen Baker explains. “This time Office was launched during a seasonally slow period for PC purchases which have, over time, proven to be a have a strong impact on Office sales. The combination of these factors, plus the increasingly saturated installed base likely explains most of the initial weakness in sales of Office 2010.”

What about new challenges from online office suites like Google (GOOG) Docs? Surely they must play a role here as well? Not really, says Baker. “These products have little awareness among the mainstream consumer who is the retail boxed version’s primary customer. Over time it is certainly likely that we will see some slowdown in retail sales as consumers alter their productivity software habits, but that time is not now.”

So Office 2010 sales will be a bit slower to ramp up than those of its predecessor. At least until the PC refresh cycle really kicks in–and there are signs that that’s beginning to happen.

How to share the iTunes Music and videos between two computers for free

System Configuration
It is important that the account you log in with on your XP system has a password set, if it does not you will not be able to login to your Windows share from OS X. You need to put your Mac in the same workgroup as your Windows PC. To do this open "Directory Access" (Applications > Utilities > Directory Access). Click on the padlock in the bottom left corner to make changes; you will be prompted for your password. If "SMB" is not ticked off, then tick it off. Select "SMB" and hit the "Configure…" button. Now enter the name of your Windows workgroup. In my case the name is "AD".



Setting up the PC to share files
You need to create and share a folder on your PC that you will then access from your Mac. To do this create a folder (or select and existing one) right click on it from Windows Explorer and select "Properties". Select the "Sharing" tab and share out the folder. I'd recommend you use a one word name for the share. For example "Mac", not "Apple Mac Share", it just narrows the risk of complications.



Setting up the Mac to share files
Open "System Preferences" (Applications > System Preferences). Go to "Sharing" under "Internet & Network", and tick off "Windows Sharing", and if it doesn't start by itself, click "Start". This will share out your entire home folder.



If You're running Tiger (10.4), you will also need to click the "Accounts" button and tick off the box next to your account name so that OS X knows to share out your particular home folder.



Step2, Go to preferences, under the sharing tab, enable "Share library..." and "Look for shared libraries..." on both computers.
Select the items you want to share.

It will show up in iTunes' side panel:


To require users to enter a password before they can see your shared items, select "Require password" and enter a password.
You will need to authorize both computers to play purchased content however. You may authorize up to 5 Machines per iTunes Music Store account.

Case in point, the latest one from a group of Israeli soldiers in the West Bank’s Hebron while on patrol with big and decidedly scary guns, using them as props in order to boogie to Ke$ha’s hit song “TiK ToK.”

There’s more controversy with this one, of course, given that it begins with a Muslim call to prayer in the background and those guns are part of the, well, fun. The incident is being investigated by the Israeli Defense Forces.

The holding hands move at the end was a nice touch though.

Supply Constraints Hampering iPhone Sales?

Here’s an anomaly in the otherwise ebullient parade of research notes on Apple (AAPL) lately: An analyst lowering his iPhone sales forecast. Observing that near-term Street estimates on iPhone sales are “likely too aggressive due to inventory drawdown and supply constraints,” Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu slashed his June quarter iPhone forecast to 7.5 million units from 9 million–a cut of about 20 percent.

“Based on our more detailed analysis of supply chain data we are shifting our iPhone assumptions to latter quarters due to the high likelihood that an inventory drawdown and screen supply constraints could impact near-term shipments over the next two quarters,” Wu wrote. “We believe most Street estimates have not factored this in and thus we believe consensus at 8.5 million iPhones for the June quarter may likely prove too aggressive.”

No such issues for the iPad, though. For that device, Wu raised his forecast. He now expects June quarter iPad sales of 3.5 million–up from 3.3 million. For calendar 2010, he’s looking for sales of 10 million–up from 9.7 million.
