Happy 25th Birthday AOL–Love, Snarky BoomTown

Here’s a video BoomTown did in honor of the 25th anniversary of the founding of AOL.

I had to miss the party back East yesterday, as I am prepping for the eighth D: All Things Digital conference–where, in fact, both AOL’s first CEO, Steve Case, and its current one, Tim Armstrong, will be interviewed onstage.

Instead, I did this video, which is inspired from an email Case sent to me recently calling me “Miss Snarky.”

While that’s completely accurate, I decided to have a little fun, all with the goal of feting AOL–which really does deserve much praise for its pioneering and innovative efforts to introduce the Internet to mainstream consumers without the snobbery so typical of Silicon Valley techies toward regular people.

The video aired yesterday during the events on the Dulles, Va., campus of AOL. Original execs Steve Case, Jim Kimsey and Ted Leonsis were there, along with about 500 AOL alumni.

AOL also dedicated three campus buildings: Dulles Main is now known as the Steve Case Center; CC2 is now known as the James Kimsey Center; and CC1 is now known as the Ted Leonsis Center.

Birthday events for AOL continue this week in New York.

Facebook and Twitter Coming to Kindle–In Glorious Black and White

Amazon (AMZN) pledged to deliver its Kindle 2.5 firmware update in late May, and now that the month is nearing its end, the company is rolling it out as promised.

As a point release, it’s a nice little update, with a new password-protection feature that locks the device when it’s in sleep mode and social networking integration that allows for the sharing of book excerpts via Facebook and Twitter. But as an effort to make the Kindle more competitive with some newly arrived and formidable rivals, it falls a bit short.

Investor Dave McClure: “Open Is for Losers”

A group of investors argued heatedly about the value of open versus closed technology on a panel today at Google’s (GOOG) I/O conference in San Francisco. Dave McClure, who oversees the seed investing program at Founders Fund, kicked things off with a provocative statement: “Open is for losers.”

McClure was answering a question from moderator Dick Costolo of Twitter, who noted that one of the big values celebrated in the tech community is openness, yet one of the hottest platforms, the iPhone, is completely controlled by Apple (AAPL).

Don’t Kid Yourself, Mobile Ad Companies: Apple Really Does Want to Lock Up the App Market

Is Apple really trying to shut out other ad networks from its iPhones and iPad apps? That’s what it looked like at first blush last month.

Recently, though, I’ve talked to some mobile ad companies that are more hopeful. They think Apple will let them compete with its iAd platform in a fair fight.

Maybe they’re saying that because they have to appear optimistic. Maybe they really believe it. But I think they’re wrong. I think Apple intends to own the ad market for its app ecosystem.

A refresher: No one says Steve Jobs is formally preventing rival ad networks from selling ads within the 200,000-plus apps his gadgets support. But the language in the developer agreement for Apple’s new mobile operating system reads as if the company is effectively crippling competitors, by making it hard for them to target ads and track their performance.

That ability, which requires transmitting data from iPhones and iPads to third parties, is standard in Web advertising. But Jobs’s agreement seems either to rule it out altogether or require “opt-in” approval from consumers. Which is almost like ruling it out.

The optimistic mobile ad folks, whom I talked to on background, think things won’t be so dire. They make a couple arguments to support their “we’ll be okay” reasoning.

1) “We’re talking to people at Apple, and they’re hinting that we’ll be okay. Or that at the very least, things haven’t been settled yet.”
2) “It makes no sense for Apple to shut out other mobile ad guys. What it really wants to do is encourage developers to build for the iPhone/iPad, by helping them make more money. The best way to do that is to allow multiple ad networks.”

The problem with these arguments:

1) At a different company, you could argue that a developer agreement is just legalese, not a strategy. But Steve Jobs seems to takes his developer agreements quite seriously. Remember when it looked like he was using a clause in the new contract to kick Adobe (ADBE) and Flash in the teeth? Turns out he really was trying to kick Adobe and Flash in the teeth.

2) Sure, Jobs could generate more money for himself and his developers by opening up his platform to outside ad networks. But you could make the same “open it up” argument about his App Store, and that’s not happening. Instead, Apple insists on approving every app, by hand. Apple also insists on approving the tools developers use to build their apps. If you want to build for a platform that lets in every app, Jobs argues, head over to Google’s (GOOG) Android. It will even let you use Flash.

Not convinced? Check out the first thing Jobs wrote to Gawker’s Ryan Tate over the weekend*. Apple, Jobs said, was offering “freedom from programs that steal your private data.”

I’m almost certain that Jobs is talking about apps and ad targeting there. And sources tell me Apple (AAPL) is defending its policies to federal regulators with the same argument: We’re doing this to protect our users’ privacy.

And perhaps that really is Apple’s primary intent. But it looks like the effect is the same regardless of their motive: It’s going to be very hard for outside ad companies to sell ads inside Apple’s apps.

*I believe, but don’t know, that the Jobs-Tate exchange is authentic.

FCC Chairman Looks to Reassure Cable Industry

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski didn’t make too many friends in the cable industry when he decided recently to extend government regulation of Internet delivery. But he delivered a keynote address today surrounded by cable executives — part of the industry’s annual meeting.

Associated Press
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski

Mr. Genachowski talked about the FCC’s commitment to taking a narrow approach to cable regulation and about willingness to find a solution for cable-industry concerns. His interviewer, cable-association president Kyle McSlarrow, sought assurances that future FCC chairmen also would be committed to a relatively light regulatory approach, and he questioned why the FCC’s approach to regulating the Internet wasn’t extending to other entities that are dominating the market, such as Google.

Mr. Genachowski’s keynote was followed by a session on the “future of media” that includes Ari Emanuel of William Morris, Thomas Rutledge of Cablevision, Evan Williams of Twitter, Tom Rogers of TiVo and Matthew Blank of Showtime.

Looking to Delete Your Facebook Account? You’re Not Alone

Over the past 24 hours, searches related to deleting Facebook accounts have been some of the top trending items on Google — indicating that the tech-world furor about the social-networking site’s privacy policies may have become more mainstream.

Thursday evening, “how do i delete my facebook account” was among the top 20 trending searches on Google Hot Trends, and Friday morning “delete facebook account” made the list. This doesn’t mean that these searches are at the top of all Internet queries; rather, it’s an indication that the topic is seeing an unusual spike in search traffic.

In April, Facebook revealed new features that extend its network to the wider Web. Since then, concerns have been growing about how much of users’ information is public and how easy it is for Facebook users to change their privacy settings on the site. Also at issue: the way in which privacy has been changing on Facebook, which began as a relatively restricted site and has since altered its default settings to share more information about users.

A Q&A in the New York Times with a Facebook representative this week only exacerbated the problem. The representative, Facebook’s vice president for public policy, responded to reader concerns by pointing out that participating in Facebook at all is “a choice” and said “Please don’t share if you’re not comfortable.” Facebook held a staff meeting on Thursday to address concerns about privacy but has not released details on what employees discussed.

A number of high-profile members of the tech community, such as Google search-engine guru Matt Cutts and Engadget co-founder Peter Rojas, have announced in recent weeks that they were deactivating their Facebook accounts, a step that shuts down the account but doesn’t delete it entirely. (Facebook itself provides information on account deactivation and deletion in its FAQ.)

Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land reported earlier this week that topics relating to Facebook account deletion were showing up on the suggestions that Google makes when you type in “How Do I” or “Delete.” By Friday morning, “how do i delete my facebook account” was the first suggestion when a user started typing the common query “How do I” into Google.

Looking at trends over time, it’s clear that terms relating to Facebook account deletion are being more widely searched and are appearing more frequently on Twitter.

But it’s important to keep in mind that searches for this specific type of query still are dwarfed by general Facebook searches, and although concerns may be spreading beyond the tech community, it would take something more significant to affect the social-networking site’s giant user base, which is now more than 400 million people. A Facebook spokeswoman told Digits that since Facebook’s changes, the site has grown by more than 10 million active users.

Cablevision Profit More Than Triples

Cablevision Systems Corp.'s first-quarter profit more than tripled as subscriber numbers rose, fueled by high-speed-Internet and digital-phone customers.

Competitor DirecTV Group Inc., meanwhile, benefited from a focus on higher-value customers as its earnings more than doubled.

Despite Cablevision's profit increase, the company learned Wednesday that the federal government has decided to regulate the Internet more aggressively, which could weigh on its growth prospects. Cablevision shares were down 7.1% to $24.91 in 4 p.m. composite trading Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Time Inc. Publishes Good News: Ad Dollars, Subscription Revenue Up

Maybe the magazine business really did touch bottom last year. At least at Time Warner’s giant Time Inc. unit: The publisher says ad revenue and subscription dollars actually increased in the first three months of 2010.

Time Warner (TWX) says ad revenue grew five percent and subscription revenue, two percent. These aren’t huge numbers, and they’re coming off lousy comps, but they’re still positive, and an increase is an increase.

In fact, the ad increase is the first the magazine group has seen in two years, Time Warner announced during its earnings call this morning.

Overall revenue still declined by one percent, but that’s because the unit no longer gets contributions from the Southern Living at Home direct sales business it sold off last year. Online revenue was up 20 percent.

Meanwhile, Time Inc.’s operating income improved dramatically to $50 million; a year ago the unit posted a $32 million loss. Chalk that up to the multiple rounds of layoffs and cost-cutting measures Ann Moore pushed through in the past couple of years.
