FCC Chairman Looks to Reassure Cable Industry

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski didn’t make too many friends in the cable industry when he decided recently to extend government regulation of Internet delivery. But he delivered a keynote address today surrounded by cable executives — part of the industry’s annual meeting.

Mr. Genachowski talked about the FCC’s commitment to taking a narrow approach to cable regulation and about willingness to find a solution for cable-industry concerns. His interviewer, cable-association president Kyle McSlarrow, sought assurances that future FCC chairmen also would be committed to a relatively light regulatory approach, and he questioned why the FCC’s approach to regulating the Internet wasn’t extending to other entities that are dominating the market, such as Google.

Mr. Genachowski’s keynote was followed by a session on the “future of media” that includes Ari Emanuel of William Morris, Thomas Rutledge of Cablevision, Evan Williams of Twitter, Tom Rogers of TiVo and Matthew Blank of Showtime.
