Sanyo Electric Co. posted a sharply narrower net loss in the fiscal fourth quarter as chip operations recovered, but the company's rechargeable-battery business reported lower profit and revenue amid tough competition from South Korean rivals.
The Japanese electronics maker, which became a unit of Panasonic Corp. in December, reported a net loss of four billion yen ($42.7 million) in the January-March quarter, compared with a loss of 111.55 billion yen a year earlier.
The company's earnings are the latest sign of an overall recovery in the global electronics industry, and come as Sanyo tries to reshape its businesses under Panasonic.
